There is absolutely no reason not to have your own business e-mail domain.

We periodically send out marketing e-mails to leads and prospects, most of which are manufacturers reps. As required by the CAN-SPAM act in the US, we include instructions to opt-out of future mailings. I happen to be looking over a couple of the opt-out messages and noted that the e-mails from a good majority of the agencies that indicate they are no longer in business come from address like my-rep-agency@aol.com. Anecdotal for sure, but interesting none the less...

We have always encouraged MRSware businesses to register and use their own domain name for their e-mail addresses. There are so many reasons to use your own domain:
  • professionalism A coordinated presence and presentation to customers, manufacturers, and peers lets everyone know you are committed to what you do.
  • investment You've put a lot into your company, show your customers and partners that you plan on being around a while.
  • technical savvy More and more often manufacturers look to the technical capabilities of their reps and prospective reps. They expect more reporting and better communications. That e-mail address is the first thing you give them and an indicator of the technical level of your company.
  • marketing Why give up this opportunity to put your company's name in front of your customers and prospects one more time. In addition to the marketing aspects, there is always the fact that your address is more memorable when it has your company name right in it.

E-mail is such an important part of communication, and therefor identity in the modern age, that it is silly not to have your own domain. Making it even sillier is that MRSware has always offered free e-mail services to its users, including the hosting of your e-mail domain. The only cost to you: the $10/year domain registration fee.

Do you have users that complain that they don't want to switch from whatever they are using now? Not a problem. MRSware is capable of forwarding the incoming e-mails automatically to any other e-mail address. Similarly, users can setup POP3 or IMAP in any mail client -- and many online mail services -- to retrieve their e-mail into that software/service, and use it exactly how they always have.

Mail services we do provide, finding a domain name that is actually available is up to you...
